On Thursday 10th November 2022, at our Monthly Meeting, we were treated to a fantastic demonstration of Rose Engine Turning by Arthur Kingdon. It was a real “eye-opener” to some of our members who had never seen such intricate turning before. A big thank-you to Arthur.
2022 has been a great year for the club, we have seen our membership numbers increase dramatically. We have also seen our new corporate image emerge with a new logo which is on our Polo Shirts – more about that later. Our public profile has been raised considerably, we participated in the national Chestnut Woodturning Weekender held in Swindon on the 30 and 31 July. We have also had two articles published in “Revolutions” the magazine for the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain. Many other articles have been published by the Wiltshire Times; Melksham News to name just two. This has all come about by the work of your committee, it would be remiss of me not to mention what they have achieved behind the scenes. George Charlton – Finger on the pulse for the past 6 years is stepping down. Thank you, George, for all of your hard work. I am also delighted to inform you that Peter Hatherell has volunteered to take over the Secretary’s job as of the AGM February 2023, Peter is already involved so that we achieve a seamless HO / TO. Tim Awmack – Took over the Treasurers job from Greg last year and hit the ground running to ensure we had an affordable programme of demonstrations. He also managed the procurement of the Polo Shirts, thank you Tim for your hard work. More recently Tim has negotiated the club rental charges and an extension to our evening meetings. Our two professional turners John Aitken (Chairman) and Pete Moncrieff–Jury both have given us much of their time at no charge with demonstrations and hands on evenings which should really have been paid for since that’s how they make their living. Both offer tutoring and a way in which members can thank them is to book your training with them. Kevin Smith, our very capable webmaster, has worked tirelessly and completely revamped our website making it one of the most professional sites that any woodturning club has in the country. He has also put our club emails on a professional footing. Alan Reed joined the committee last February bringing with him in-depth knowledge in Safeguarding which enables the club not only to help young turners in a safe environment but also those would be turners that might have learning difficulties. I would also like to recognise and thank Lucy for her hard work. Lucy has willingly volunteered to come along each month and manage our canteen for us, a task that in the past has proved to be problematic with so many members that would have at one time been in and out of the Kitchen. Thanks to Lucy we now have a system which is both efficient and safe. I must also thank George Flowers for his continuing support with running the meat draw, I’m not sure how long George has run the draw, but long may it continue. His contribution to our successful evenings brings in valuable revenue to the club coffers. For 2022 our chosen charity is - the Wiltshire Air Ambulance a very worthy cause. All the competition pieces have been sold or will be sold to support that charity, and so at this point It is my pleasure to introduce to you all our two guests for this evening: Hollie Perryman – Community Engagement & Volunteer Coordinator for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance based at Melksham. and Kat Bowhay – Community Engagement & Special Events Coordinator for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. The ladies helped John and Pete judge the exhibits. Results of Competition: Novice: 1st John Weller 2nd Kevin Crane Intermediate: 1st Sam Morris 2nd Colin Harrison 3rd Neil Morris Advanced: 1st Ken Crittle 2nd Peter Hatherell To close out the evening on behalf of the committee I wish to thank all members for your continued support and making this club what it is – one of the best in the south of the country. Phil Lobb - Deputy Chairman
